Failed Automotive Breakthroughs

For every great automotive breakthrough of the past century, such as windshield wipers, FM radio and brakes, there have been dozens of failed attempts at making a breakthrough. Some of the following never caught on with the general public for a variety of reasons: impracticality, unreliability, cost, outright goofiness, or sometimes all of those reasons at once.
