Jeep Recalls Wrangler SUVs to Replace Steering Column Components

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) Jeep division is recalling more than 35,000 Wrangler models from model years 2007 through 2010 to replace steering wheel and column components that could become damaged by dust contamination.

Jeep drivers like the person who owns the one pictured above are more likely to experience the problems this recall intends to address. In cars frequently used with the roof and doors removed dust can contaminate a fairly delicate component in the steering wheel called a clockspring. It delivers electrical current to the various electronic controls found on a modern steering wheel, including the airbag, and that's the main concern of FCA and Transport Canada: a dirty enough clockspring can prevent the driver's side airbag from deploying in a crash.

Dealers are being instructed to replace the steering column shroud, steering wheel back cover and the clockspring.
