Faulty Clutches Prompt Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Recall

Broken clutches would render vehicle undriveable

Mercedes-Benz is recalling three of its compact 2016 CLA-Class sedans to fix improperly manufactured clutch assemblies.

In the affected cars, one of the clutch disks may not have been properly welded to its hub and could separate, causing a loss of motive power. Dealers are being instructed to replace the dual-clutch assembly in the vehicles covered by this recall.

The CLA uses Benz's seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission, shared with the GLA- and B-Class models; as in other dual-clutch gearboxes, one clutch is connected to the odd-numbered gears, while the other looks after even-numbered ratios, allowing for quick, smooth shifts.
