BMW Recalls Crossovers for Damaged Child Seat Anchors

More than 30,000 BMW X3 and X4 crossover models are under recall for LATCH child seat anchors that could be damaged "during vehicle operation."

The model years included in the recall are 2011 through 2017 for the X3, and 2015 through 2017 for the X4.

Transport Canada doesn't provide any more details than that as to how the damage could occur, but the gist is that once it happens, the anchors could fail to keep a child's seat secure in the event of a crash.

For those of you without small children, the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) anchors are those hooks installed behind the rear seats of cars since 2002 designed to keep a kid's car seat cinched down beyond what the seatbelt can do on its own. BMW is instructing its dealers to weld a reinforcing bracket between the lower anchor bars and the car's body.

Transport Canada says the damage in question is not caused by the use of the LATCH anchors themselves.
