Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro to Share New 10-Speed Transmission

Jul 4, 2016

Summary
Ford, GM jointly developed the new gearbox

We already knew the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 would be one of the first GM models to use a 10-speed automatic transmission, but it seems fairly certain Ford will use the same gearbox in its Mustang muscle car, perhaps for the 2018 model year.

The news comes from a member of Mustang6g.com, a discussion forum for owners and enthusiasts of the sixth-generation Mustang that went on sale as a 2015 model. Poster "darrenb" found a reference to the 10-speed in the Ford dealership parts look-up system, Microcat.

That makes it pretty clear the transmission will be used in the 'Stang, but its first appearance in 2018 models remains speculation.

We're not surprised to find out two staunch performance car rivals will share a key mechanical component: Ford and GM developed the transmission together, and Ford has already announced its plan to make the 10-speed available in the F-150 pickup. For GM's part, it says the 10-speed will be bolted into eight of its models by the end of 2018, and we would not be at all surprised if one of them ends up being the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins.
