Mini Airbag Flaw Prompts Clubman Recall: Not Takata

Jul 28, 2016

Summary
Curtain airbags may not deploy properly in a crash

BMW's Mini brand has recalled more than 1,000 examples of its brand-new Clubman model to fix side airbags that may not deploy properly in a crash. This is not related to the massive Takata airbag recall that continues to plague automakers and vehicle owners around the world.

In these 2016 and 2017 model year Clubmans, Transport Canada says a fabric cover over the side curtain airbags may not have been pre-perforated properly. If that cover doesn't tear away as intended as the airbag inflates during a crash, it could interfere with its deployment and increase the risk of injury to those inside the vehicle.

Mini says its dealers will "rework" the fabric airbag covers in the affected vehicles.
