Mazda6 Sedans Under Recall for Airbag Fault

Recent events have led us to expect every airbag-related recall to involve the Takata scandal, but here's one that's completely unrelated. Mazda has recalled more than 7,500 of its Mazda6 mid-size sedans to fix airbags that may not deploy in a crash.

Transport Canada's recall notice says the fault lies with a supplemental restraint system (SRS) controller that could fail to pop the airbags in a collision severe enough to warrant their deployment. The same fault would lead to a failure to activate the seatbelt pretensioners, which are supposed to cinch the belts up tight when the car's sensors detect a collision.

Mazda says cars that exhibit this fault would trigger the airbag warning light to indicate something isn't right and is instructing its dealers to replace the SRS controllers in all of the 2009 and 2010 models covered by this recall.
