Confirmed: Canada to get Mercedes-Benz G 550 4×4 Squared

Mercedes-Benz will officially bring the wild 4x4 Squared G 550 (G-Wagon) to Canada, the marque announced on Monday.

The 4x4 Squared features portal axles to increase ground clearance (to 43 cm) and off-road capabilities; its maker calls the G-Class a "cross-country vehicle," rather than some run-of-the-mill SUV, but this is the version we'd most like to take overland. Mercedes says the Squared's frame required no modifications in the transformation to upgraded off-roader.

Shared with the standard G 550 is a seven-speed transmission and a 4.0L turbo V8 good for 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, all of which is available from 2,250 rpm.

The company says the 4x4 Squared will go on sale in early 2017, at a price we imagine will be considerably higher than the regular G 550's $127,200 starting tag.
