Ford Expands Takata Airbag Recall

Ford has announced the addition of nearly 162,000 Canadian vehicles to its list of those under recall to replace faulty Takata airbag components.

The automaker said this is a planned expansion of its existing recall campaign to remove the flawed parts from road-going vehicles; the vehicles affected are the Mustang (2005-2009 and 2012), Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ (2006-2009 and 2012), Ranger and Edge and Lincoln MKX (2007-2009) and the Ford GT (2005-2006).

As in other Takata airbag-equipped vehicles, these models have inflators that don't react well to high-humidity environments and could develop excess internal pressure during deployment. That pressure could cause the metal inflator to break apart, pieces of which could be propelled at high speed into the cabin, causing injury or death to those riding in the car.

Transport Canada issued its first Takata-related recall in 2008, but the true scope of the problem became especially clear in 2015 when the list of recalled vehicles expanded massively to include more than 40 million cars and light trucks around the world.

Canada's transportation safety regulator hasn't issued its official recall notice yet.
