A study commissioned by German online auto parts retailer KFZTEILE24 has named five Canadian cities among the most driveable urban areas in the world, and calls Calgary Canada's most car-friendly city.

The company says it started with the 500 cities with the highest number of registered vehicles, then narrowed the list down by choosing 100 urban environments with the most available traffic data. Their next step was to look at a variety of factors, including congestion levels, public transport options, costs of parking and fuel and the frequency of road rage, among others, to come up with their rankings.

Calgary placed 10th on the list; other Canadian cities on the list include Montreal (13), Toronto (14), Ottawa (22) and Vancouver (48).

Each of the nine criteria the survey looked at was weighted based on its perceived impact on driving in an urban environment. Congestion levels were deemed the most important (measured according to the TomTom GPS traffic index, or based on information provided by the city's administration), followed by public transit accessibility (the assumption being that better transit means fewer drivers) and the average speed of traffic, which was measured on the drive from each city's centre to its international airport, calculated at midday and during morning and evening rush hours.

The world's top 10 driving cities, according to KTZTEILE24, are Dusseldorf, Germany; Dubai, UAE; Zurich, Switzerland; Tokyo, Japan; Basel, Switzerland; Singapore; Dortmund, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Munich, Germany; and Calgary.
