An Ontario man has broken a Guinness World Record for the longest distance driven in a go-kart in a continuous 24-hour period.
Brampton's Matthew Hayley completed the feat yesterday at noon at that city's Formula Kartways indoor circuit, when The Brampton Guardian reported that Hayley had covered 772.29 km in 4,102 laps of the track. He needed to drive 3,940 laps to break the previous record of 733.58 km (set in 2014 by Trey Shannon in Charlotte, North Carolina), and did so with about 90 minutes to spare before the 24-hour mark.
Hayley said his record-setting drive was more than a frivolous attempt at fame: he began a go-kart training program in a bid to battle depression brought on by his mother's death from cancer.
With the help of a sponsorship from Formula Kartways, he said he trained for months with coach Shaun de Jager before attempting the record, and in the process set a record lap time for the track of 15.591 seconds. He also used the media exposure generated by his endurance drive to raise money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
