Ford has just revealed the new Ford Transit Connect Wagon at the Chicago Auto Show. The new small van gets new safety features, a new interior, plus a new diesel engine.
Ford is targeting active people who need space for cargo and passengers, but don't need the space offered by the full-size Transit van or even a smaller minivan. The box-like shape of the 2019 Transit Connect Wagon offers seating for seven, but converts easily to cargo duty.
With the rear seats removed and the middle seats folded flat, Ford says the Transit Connect Wagon offers more cargo space than a Chevy Tahoe. They didn't give exact figures, but the much larger Tahoe offers a cavernous 2,681 L of space behind the front seats.
The new Transit Connect has a new nose that looks more like Ford's other small offerings like the new Fiesta. It is offered in two wheelbase choices in the US, but Canadians get only the long-wheelbase option.
New engines include a 2.0L four-cylinder gas engine that offers stop-start and an eight-speed automatic. There is also a segment-first 1.5L diesel engine. Ford expects the new diesel, badged EcoBlue, to achieve better than 7.8 L/100 km on the highway. It shares the eight-speed with the gas engine.
Inside, the Transit Connect Wagon gets a new instrument panel with an available 6.5-inch floating touchscreen, a driver information centre, and wireless charging. It will have FordPass 4G WiFi standard with Sync 3 infotainment optional.
New driver assist features include automatic emergency braking, pre-collision assist, and available radar cruise control. The Transit Connect Wagon will have blind spot alert with cross-traffic warnings and lane-keep assist.
