Audi has announced it is working on an all-electric GT that will go on sale in 2020 as a new flagship for the brand's sports car range.

The German automaker revealed the plan at its annual press conference, held today at its Ingolstadt headquarters.

Accompanying the news was a sketch showing a long, low car that, despite the exaggerated proportions typical of concepts and prototypes, doesn't look entirely outlandish. Some speculation suggests the forthcoming EV could replace the R8 atop the brand's car range; the rendering shows what looks, to our eyes, like a four-door coupe.

Audi board chair Rupert Stadler called the new GT car "how we will take our high-performance Audi Sport brand into the future." Audi has revealed no technical details about the vehicle, but said it will be built at the company's Böllinger Höfe factory, located about two hours' drive west of Ingolstadt.

Along with the Porsche Mission E, a four-door Audi sports car points to Germany getting serious about unseating Tesla in the high-performance EV class.
