2019 Ford GT Carbon Series Sheds Weight, Adds Kit

Ford is expanding its GT supercar lineup for 2019 with the addition of a Carbon Series trim to split the difference between the standard car and the track-ready Competition Series model.

Ford says it cut about 18 kg (40 pounds) from the standard GT's curb weight with carbon fibre wheels, a polycarbonate engine cover and carbon fibre stripes, A-pillars and lower body panels. There's also more of the lightweight material in the cabin, making this the GT that boasts the most exposed carbon fibre.

While the Carbon Series' lighter weight is intended to attract track driving enthusiasts, Ford says it also responds to customer demand who wanted niceties like air conditioning, a stereo and the Sync 3 infotainment system – none of which are offered in the Competition Series – along with the statement-making exposed carbon fibre.

But don't stop at Starbucks on your way to the track: Ford left out the cupholders and driver's side seat storage bin in a nod to weight saving.

Other 2019 additions include the option of silver, orange, red and blue exterior trim; inside, all Carbon Series cars come with silver stitching on the seats and steering wheel.

Ford left the GT's dirty bits unchanged, so the 3.5L Ecoboost V6 still boasts 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque.
