General Motors Launches Ariv E-Bikes
General Motors has announced a new electric bike venture called Ariv (arrive) whose two bike models will begin shipping to customers this spring.
Ariv's first two bike models are a compact model called Meld and a folding bicycle named Merge.
Both are driven by an electric motor GM developed for the Ariv e-bikes. GM says it delivers "top-of-segment power and torque for its size," but doesn't get specific. The company does say the motor is good for up to 25 km/h and allows for four levels of pedal-assisted power.
Ariv's battery charges in 3.5 hours and promises 64 km of riding. A walk mode uses the motor to help a rider walk the bike up steep hills.
Ariv's smartphone app lets the bikes' users connect with the bike via Bluetooth. Current app functions include speed, distance travelled and remaining battery charge. Ariv says a future app feature will help riders arrive at their destination "sweat free."
Every Ariv e-bike comes with a smartphone mount with an integrated USB port for charging.
GM says it came to the Ariv name through a crowdsourcing campaign that "allowed us to bring consumers into the development of our brand," said Ariv director Hannah Parish. Ariv says its spring launch will see the first bikes delivered in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. GM doesn't say when the bikes will be available in Canada.
