Hybrid Power Coming to Subaru Crosstrek in 2026

Summary
The third-generation Crosstrek Hybrid has been revealed south of the border.

Fresh off its win as AutoTrader’s subcompact SUV of the year, Subaru of America has announced that it will address the one major issue our panel of judges had with the model thanks to the addition of hybrid power.

The Crosstrek Hybrid will feature Subaru’s series-parallel hybrid powertrain, which mates electric motors to a 2.5L boxer engine. All in, the unit will churn out 194 hp, making it the most powerful trim in the lineup. By comparison, the standard 2.0L engine that powers the Convenience and Touring trims makes 152 hp, while the unelectrified 2.5L engine that powers the Onyx, Limited, Wilderness trims makes 182 hp.

As with non-hybrid Crosstreks, the electrified model’s power will be routed to all four wheels symmetrically via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Similarly, the Crosstrek Hybrid will continue to offer Subaru’s off-road driving mode, X-mode, which features hill descent control, and it will give drivers 221 mm (8.7 in) of ground clearance.

While we anticipate that the electrified powertrain will help improve fuel economy, neither official nor estimated efficiency figures have yet been shared by Subaru.

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid will be marketed as a model year 2026 vehicle in the U.S. and the first examples are expected to reach dealerships in the fall. Unfortunately, it is not yet clear when the model will reach the Canadian market. We have reached out to Subaru Canada for comment, but had not received a response at time of publication.
