Genesis Debuts Two Big, Swanky Concept Cars to Define Next Decade

The Korean brand also sheds some light on its upcoming hypercar.

Genesis revealed two gorgeous new concept cars to the world at the Seoul Mobility Show today to cap off its first decade as a brand and set the tone for its next one.

The Genesis X Gran Coupe and Gran Convertible Concepts are based on the regular wheelbase G90 flagship sedan, but the rear doors are cut off to create elite and exclusive show cars. The body styles and sheer length of the concepts give them a wicked amount of presence, while the colours offer a healthy dose of flamboyance that gets the right kind of attention. Flashy without being tacky, the two concepts are ultra swanky and showcase the brand’s vision for its future.

Both models feature the brand’s signature double-line stacked headlights and a new interpretation of the crest-shaped grille. Long, wide, and low with huge wheels, the Genesis X Gran Coupe and Convertible concepts look exquisite from every angle.

Light olive wood veneer with some pretty grain and a backlit olive leaf motif is used inside the cabin of the coupe concept for a unique texture. The combination of green and tan leather with a fully quilted roof makes for the most luxurious interior Genesis has ever designed. The sculptural steering wheel is also a highlight.

The convertible concept is a car Prince would be proud of — it’s entirely purple. The monochromatic fully saturated purple interior is on the verge of being too much but the intentional details make it all very tasteful. Crystal details are used in both concepts to elevate the cabins even further.

A big, swanky two-door needs to be swift, and under their long hoods lurk a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with an e-supercharger. Genesis says this powertrain would need to have further development if it were to be used in a production vehicle. Brand executives said after the debut that they originally saw the Mercedes S-Class Coupe and Convertible as possible competition for these concepts, but they're setting their aspirations higher towards Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The Genesis X Gran Coupe and Gran Convertible Concepts look ready for production, and the brand says these types of body styles are necessary to elevate the brand into new luxury territory.

For the first time, Genesis also showcased a half-scale model of its upcoming GMR-001 mid-engine hypercar prototype with which it plans to compete in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the 2027 IMSA Sportscar Championship. This will be the brand’s first foray into motorsports and the debut race car for Genesis Magma Racing.

The hypercar is more than just an over-the-top vanity project. The Magma moniker will someday make it onto the driveways of the world, as Genesis plans to use it on consumer-oriented performance cars in the near future. With big plans for the future and its next decade, it’s little wonder the brand went all out for its home market’s biggest auto show.
