Like a dinosaur resurrected from DNA cast in amber, the Ram TRX has returned. The truck-maker’s high-performance off-roader is back for a second generation, boasting more power, more torque, a handful of interior refinements, and an SRT badge.
With the return of the V8 to Ram trucks, the TRX can now supersede the inline-six-powered RHO edition in the lineup. It will even bring more power to the table than the last-generation, Hemi V8-powered TRX (which made 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque) — and not just a little bit. With the help of go-fast parts from its in-house tuning brand, Direct Connection, the automaker has managed to squeeze a whopping 777 hp and 680 lb-ft of torque out of the 6.2L supercharged engine, which gives it a healthy advantage over even the Ford F-150 Raptor R, which makes just 720 hp.
The Jurassic power figure will allow the pickup truck to reach 97 km/h (60 mph) in as little as 3.5 seconds — a figure that will worry most Porsche 911 drivers. Power is funnelled to all four wheels via a familiar eight-speed automatic transmission.
That acceleration figure is likely measured on dry pavement (of course), but the Ram 1500 SRT TRX will be capable of performance that is just as extreme on dirt. A Dana 60 rear axle, forged aluminum front suspension, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks will all help the TRX fly across desert courses.
Inside, the TRX will benefit from all of the latest Ram 1500’s technology, including a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch instrument screen behind the steering wheel, a 10-inch head-up display, a 900-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 19 speakers, heated and ventilated front seats (useful for desert racing) that can also massage you (probably less useful off-road), and reclining rear seats.
Set to go on sale this summer as a model year 2027 vehicle, prices for the Ram 1500 SRT TRX have not yet been revealed. However, the cost will assuredly be lofty, since the six-cylinder RHO already costs over $120,000.
Plus: The Turbo Diesel Power Wagon Pickup Fans Have Been Pining For
And that’s not all. Ram also announced another high torque pickup, albeit this time it might actually lower your fuel bill. Buyers will finally be able to get a high-output Cummins turbo diesel engine in their Ram Power Wagon.
Long asked for by customers, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis admitted to media ahead of the truck's unveiling that he didn't know "why we didn't do this sooner." The diesel truck will be identical to the more familiar, gas-powered Power Wagon, but for some Cummins badges. Those badges, then, will be the major indicator that you’re stopped at a light next to a truck whose 6.7L six-cylinder engine can churn out 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. That means that the first-ever Ram Power Wagon Cummins can tow up to 9,072 kg (20,000 lbs).
The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic gearbox whose first six gears are designed to help get heavy loads up and running, and whose last two prioritize highway towing. With a 117-litre fuel tank, Ram is promising a range of 965 km.
Like the TRX, the Ram Power Wagon Cummins is expected to arrive this summer. Prices for the model are not yet available.
