Land Rover Teases All-New Discovery Prior to Paris Debut

Sep 26, 2016

Summary
New Discovery shares cues with Disco Sport, but will be larger

British SUV maker Land Rover has released the first official image of the all-new Discovery model it will properly unveil later this month, ahead of the Paris auto show.

The photo shows a front end notably different from that of the Discovery Sport introduced at last year's Frankfurt show; while the two are no doubt related, the non-Sport model puts more visual emphasis on Land Rover's off-road reputation. Viewed straight-on like this, there's also a passing resemblance to the Kia Soul, a comparison we're sure Kia's folks will like more than Land Rover's.

But while the two models share a name and styling cues, there's evidence the Discovery will be longer: Land Rover calls this a "full-size" SUV, while it referred to the Disco Sport as a compact, but both are seven-seaters. That's not a new strategy for Land Rover, whose Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are small vs. large versions of the same vehicle.

The Discovery Sport uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 240 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, which comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission; we'll be curious to see if the larger Disco sticks with that or bumps up to a V6, even as an option.
