Chevrolet Lets You Set Up Location-Based Alerts for Your Car
Chevrolet is launching a new feature within their mobile app to help you keep an eye on your vehicle. It will let you set up virtual boundaries and provide notifications if the vehicle leaves the designated area.
The Vehicle Locate feature is the latest addition to the myChevrolet app. It lets the user set a boundary area, or geofence, for the vehicle ranging from a 75 m radius up to 30 km. Then, if the vehicle leaves that circle, up to 10 users can get an alert on their phone letting them know.
So why would you want such an alert? GM offers up a number of reasons, the biggest one being for concerned parents. Tell your kid they can't leave town with your wheels, and your car will let you know if they do. Or you can set it to let you know that yes, they did, in fact, arrive at school this morning.
They also pitch it as safety for online dating. Worried about meeting that person you met online? Let a friend know automatically when you've arrived at the restaurant, when you've left, and when you've arrived home safely.
Another suggested use is to notify your partner that you're nearly home, saving you sending a text. Though one that might be a bit of a stretch is for people who lend out their pickup to a friend. Find out if that run to the hardware store is in another town, or let you know that your pride and joy is about to be returned.
We're guessing the biggest use will be from parents keeping an eye on their kids. Vehicle Locate will work on eligible 2012 or newer Chevrolet vehicles, and it's included in the OnStar Remote Access Plan.
