Watch: Dashcam Catches Head-On Crash with Red Light Runners

Oct 1, 2019

Summary
Cam catches big collision

We've all experienced someone running a late yellow or red light. Usually, the other drivers stop quickly enough to avoid the crash and all is well – other than an exchange of honks and maybe a single-finger wave. But sometimes the other driver isn't able to stop in time. Sometimes, even worse, two drivers enter the same intersection late into the yellow, and a scary crash like this is the end result.

It's a dashcam video taken at McCowan Road and McNicoll Avenue in the Toronto neighbourhood of Scarborough. The camera car is sitting and waiting for the light to turn green. The traffic lights turn yellow on McNicoll, then nearly four seconds later a car we can't identify enters the intersection from the right at what looks to be very high speed. At the same time, a crossover that looks to be a second-gen Ford Escape or a first-gen Honda Pilot enters the intersection from the left, though at a much slower pace.

The light turns red before the crossover hits mid-sidewalk, but the car is well into the intersection. Neither vehicle's brake lights come on before the left-turning crossover and the car collide. It's a brutal collision, one that should easily have been avoided.

The person who posted the video said that both drivers were taken to hospital, but we don't have an update on their conditions.
