2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Debuts, Canadian Pricing Announced

The hybrid version of the Mazda CX-50 will finally reach Canadian consumers for the 2025 model year, and prices are set to start at $42,950 (before the $2,095 destination charge).

Officially known as the CX-50 Hybrid, the model will be powered by a Toyota-sourced electrification package that combines a 2.5L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with three electric motors, and an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission. The unit will send 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels thanks to standard electric AWD.

Mazda estimates that the CX50 Hybrid uses just 6.2 litres of fuel for every 100 km driven. As a result, the hybrid model gets 32 more hp and consumes 40 per cent less fuel than the standard CX-50.

The automaker says it has placed the batteries that power the electric motors in the rear section of the floor in order to prevent them from robbing owners of too much storage space. Should a driver need to haul more than the cargo compartment can contain, they will be able to tow up to 1,500 lbs (680 kg) behind them on all hybrid models.

The CX-50 Hybrid will get unique wheel designs, its own front bumper styling, and it will be available with Garnet Red leather interior upholstery, to further differentiate it from the internal combustion-only models.

The hybrid powertrain isn’t the only change for the 2025 model year. To make the standard CX-50 more attractive, Mazda has added more standard tech across the lineup. Despite the starting price of $39,950, the crossover now benefits from Alexa Built-in, which drivers can use to control certain vehicle functions or at-home Amazon products using their voice. In addition, wireless phone charging is now standard.

Mazda has also added two new features to help drivers in emergencies. The first is Private eCall, which automatically connects occupants to an emergency call centre when the vehicle determines that first responders might be required. On the other hand, Stolen Vehicle Assistance can help authorities track and retrieve a vehicle when a theft is suspected.

The standard CX-50 GS-L and CX-50 GT are powered by a 2.5L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine that makes 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Those who need a little extra oomph can opt for the CX-50 GT Turbo or the CX-50 Meridian Edition, both of which are powered by a turbocharged version of the 2.5L engine. On 93 octane fuel, the powertrain makes 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2025 CX-50 will start reaching Canadian showrooms in August, but buyers intent on buying an electrified model will have to wait until late 2024 before they can get the CX-50 Hybrid.
