2025 Mini Cooper Convertible Has a Sunroof in its Soft Top

What Mini lacks in groundbreaking design innovation, it makes up for in neat tech. While the 2025 Mini Cooper looks a lot like the model that preceded it (and every model before that), it is peerless in delivering fun gadgets that help make drivers feel special. The brand’s latest model, the Mini Cooper Convertible, may look familiar but, in a first for the segment, it is bringing a special fabric roof that also has a sunroof. Bars at the top of the roof along which a portion of the fabric can slide back up to 40 cm (15.7 inches). That allows drivers to get a little sun, whether the weather permits full top-down driving or not.
Should the temperature improve, the Mini Cooper Convertible’s roof folds all the way down, and sits behind the rear seats. Not only does this make the car look like a vintage convertible, but it also leaves more room in the trunk for bags. With the roof up, the car can handle 215 litres of luggage. With it down, that shrinks to 160 litres. Unusually, the tailgate folds downward, and a hatch behind the rear headrests can also be opened to make loading the trunk easier.
As with other convertibles, the roof can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 30 km/h, with the former taking 15 seconds, and the latter requiring 18 seconds. The sunroof can be opened and closed at any speed.
Elsewhere, the convertible version is much like other Mini Coopers, though the automaker claims that the car’s central OLED infotainment screen provides a high degree of contrast, making it easier to read with the roof down and the sun beating down on it. That should make it easier to see exactly how much time you’ve spent with the roof down, thanks to the return of the Mini’s Always Open Timer, which tracks how much time you’ve spent driving in the open air. The 9.4-inch-diameter touchscreen is complemented by a head-up display that shows the driver important information. As with the hardtop model, the Mini Cooper Convertible features an AI assistant called Spike and a variety of standard and optional active safety systems.
The model will be available with grey or black faux leather seats with contrasting textile silhouettes in blue. The model will also be available with JCW sport seats in beige and Nightshade Blue artificial leather or black leather with a multicolour knitted fabric on the shoulders with red contrast stitching.
Outside, the model will be available with 12 paint colours, including the Convertible-exclusive Cooper Grey. Wheels ranging form 16 to 18 inches are available depending on trim.
Canadian specification have yet to be announced, but globally the Mini Cooper Convertible will be available with three engine options. All displace 2.0 litres and feature four cylinders. The base model Cooper C Convertible makes 163 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque and can get to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. The Mini Cooper S Convertible makes 204 hp and 407 lb-ft of torque, which allows it to reach 100 km/h in 6.9. Power figures for the sportiest JCW model have not yet been revealed.
The 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible will be assembled at the brand’s Oxford plant.
