As a young company, it has taken Rivian some time to learn the tricks of the automotive trade, and in its 15th year of existence, it has finally revealed its first-ever special edition vehicles: the R1T and R1S California Dune.
Inspired by the sand-crashing off-road antics of the California desert, the models feature an exclusive new colour — a washed out shade of tan called California Dune — new wheels, and some off-road goodies.
The wheels, inspired by the world of rallying, feature only small spokes to prevent too much sand and mud from getting stuck in them, and can be finished in either black or California Dune. They are wrapped in all-terrain tires thanks to the inclusion of Rivian’s All-Terrain package. The equipment group also adds full-length skidplates, a spare wheel, and an onboard air compressor.
The model also gets Maxtrax vehicle recovery boards and mounting bars for them on the roof. Meanwhile, the R1T pickup truck also benefits from a redesigned, factory-installed tonneau cover that the automaker says is easier to use and quieter.
Inside, both the truck and the SUV get a two-tone interior in Black Mountain and Sandstone, and a new flooring material that has been designed to make cleaning sand easier.
Powering it all is Rivian’s standard three-motor electric powertrain, which sends power to all four wheels and delivers a total of 850 hp and 1,103 lb-ft of torque. According to U.S. government estimates, the model should be good for 529 km of range per charge. As with other R1Ss and R1Ts, the California Dune models come with a variety of driving modes, including All-Terrain, Rock Crawl, Rally, and most importantly, Soft Sand.
The limited-edition model is now ready to be ordered, with Canadian prices starting at $149,900 for the R1T California Dune pickup truck, and $158,900 for the R1S California Dune SUV. Deliveries are expected to occur in six to eight weeks for both.
