Summary
The spiritual successor of the S90 is going electric.

Volvo has unveiled the ES90 as the brand’s new electric flagship sedan, positioned to be at the top of Volvo’s lineup alongside the EX90 SUV.

The ES90 will be the first car in Volvo’s lineup to use its new 800 volt technology, allowing for a longer driving range and faster charging. Indeed, the new model will have the ability to add 300 km of driving range in just 10 minutes at a fast charger.

Thanks to a 106 kWh battery pack, Volvo estimates that the sedan will have a total driving range of 700 km on the European WLTP test cycle — it should be noted that estimates from North American authorities tend to be more conservative.

Performance will vary depending on trim, with both single-motor rear wheel drive, and dual-motor all wheel drive powertrains available. Power ratings will range from 329 hp to 670 hp.

The ES90’s somewhat unusual design is intended to combine the practicality of a sedan and SUV, according to Volvo. Despite the sedan-like shape, the new model has a higher ride height and a hatchback, instead of a trunk — think of it as a larger Polestar 2.

Interior space should also be an upgrade compared to the gas-power S90, with a larger 3.1 metre (122-inch) wheelbase. Despite that, the ES90 is slightly shorter in overall length than the older sedan. The new model offers 424 L (15 cu. ft.) of cargo volume, which expands to 733 L (26 cu. ft.) with the seats folded down.

In terms of looks, the ES90 shares many details with EX90, such as the C-shaped tail lights and “Thor's Hammer” headlights. Inside, occupants benefit from a 9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch tablet-style infotainment screen. The display are powered by Volvo's most powerful computing platform yet, and run on the Google built-in operating system. That means that services like Google Maps, Assistant, and Play are available natively on the infotainment screen.

The ES90 will also be equipped with one lidar sensor, five radar sensors, eight cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors which will run what Volvo calls its "Safe Space Technology." This monitors the road and powers active safety technologies as well as advanced driver assistance technologies.

According to already announced European pricing, the ES90 will rival other luxury midsize EV sedans such as the BMW i5 and Mercedes Benz EQE sedan.

The ES90 is already available to order in various European countries, with sales in other markets set to start later this year, and in 2026.
