Vehicle Prices Fell in 2025 As Canadians Focused on Affordability, AutoTrader Data Shows

Dec 11, 2025  · 3 min read

Summary
Canadians bought more economy cars and fewer luxury vehicles in 2025.

Every year, AutoTrader combs through the data to find out which vehicles users are interested in, which vehicles are selling well, and what broader trends can be extrapolated. This year, as in 2024, the trends suggest that Canadians are increasingly focused on finding affordable vehicles.

As ever, the Ford F-150 topped our list of most searched for and most sold vehicle in 2025. Overall, the top 10 most searched for and sold vehicles lists for 2025 look an awful lot like they did last year, when financial pressure on Canadian shoppers really started bearing down.

However, that doesn’t mean that there were no changes between 2024 and 2025. Searches for luxury vehicles were down 11 per cent this year, and no luxury vehicle improved its standing on the top 10 most searched for or most sold vehicles lists. Canadians have even lowered their expectations when they search for aspirational vehicles, with sports cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette overtaking the Porsche 911 and BMW 3 Series in that category.

The push for affordable vehicles and the loss of federal incentives for zero-emission vehicles have also hurt sales of electric vehicles (EVs). Interest among non-EV owners has slid to 42 per cent (from 46 per cent in 2024) but, despite that, searches for EVs were up overall this year, accounting for 9 per cent of all searches on AutoTrader, up from 8 per cent a year ago.

Curiously, fears that U.S. tariffs might send new vehicle prices skyrocketing did not appear in the data in 2025. New vehicle prices were actually down on average, falling 2.5 per cent year-over-year to $63,665. We aren’t out of the woods yet, as the impacts of tariffs may have been offset by the high volume of vehicles already at dealerships and protections found in the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement have helped keep auto parts moving across borders.

However, our data found that price increases as a result of trade disputes were felt in the used car market. Indeed, the average price of a used vehicle increased 2.2 per cent to $35,494 in 2025.

The good news for people in the market for a new vehicle is that inventory remains healthy, which should help stabilize pricing into 2026.
