Toyota Indicates That the Next Highlander Will Be All Electric

Summary
A day ahead of the Highlander’s unveiling, Toyota has shown us its BEV badge.

Over the course of the last many months, Toyota has been on a tear, revealing a new lineup of all-electric vehicles. Thanks to a new teaser image the brand shared today, we know there’s one more on its way: the upcoming fifth-generation Highlander.

Just one day ahead of its official unveiling (Tuesday, February 10), Toyota shared a teaser image of the Highlander’s badge confirming that will be the vehicle revealed tomorrow, as many had already surmised. What was less expected was the badge under it located, presumably, on the bottom lefthand side of the SUV’s tailgate.

It features a blue dot, which Toyota uses to identify its electrified vehicles, a badge reading AWD (all wheel drive), and, more relevantly, a BEV badge, denoting that this will be a battery electric vehicle.

Moreover, the brand confirmed that the vehicle will have three rows of seating, making this Toyota’s first three-row all-electric vehicle for the North American market. Whether, like the new Lexus ES, the Highlander will be available as both an electric vehicle (EV) and a vehicle with an internal combustion engine or just the former remains to be seen.

What we can say with confidence is that the electric Highlander helps round out a fairly complete lineup of electric crossovers for Toyota. Alongside the mid-size Highlander, the brand will have the bZ and the bZ Woodland (a compact and slightly larger compact crossover) as well as the subcompact C-HR.

All three of the previously announced electric crossovers are based on the same platform, so it will be interesting to see what underpins the upcoming Highlander. Check back in with us tomorrow to find out everything there is to know about the vehicle.
